Blog: P2P

  1. What is file sharing?

File sharing is when you use a network to send files over the internet to other computers. It is a way to share content with other people.
  2. What is P2P File sharing?
P2P file sharing is the same as regular file sharing except it specifically regards to a peer-to-peer distribution meaning that these peers are on the same network and are not from distribution servers. This means that you can get your content from a random person on the internet instead of a huge company with a distribution server like Hulu.
  3. What are some examples of P2P file sharing?
One example of P2P file sharing is BitTorrent. On BitTorrent, you have access to a huge database of content for free. You can download whatever you want as long as some other peer is providing that content for you to download.  Although it is unethical because it is basically stealing company's content, lots of people have no problem with it.  Wired.com reports "that BitTorrent traffic accounts for more than one-third of all data sent across the Internet" (Thompson). Another example is PirateBay while another example could be Google Drive if you have connections that provide you with content that you want.
